Hölderlin with his visionary outburst / said that the forests would end up being a pile of dead wood / mistrust of the perverse effects of modernity / and the fallacy of a progress with only one sense persists both in the cynicism / of the global media simulation / and in the apocalyptic vision of ancient religions with no expiration date / the indiscriminate deforestation in the forests of Brazil / and the extortion of minerals in the Congo / are barely showing that the biggest problem to be solved by humanity / is still private property

Alex Katz, January snow (1993)
¿Tal vez un año a otro sobreviene
como cae la nieve
o como las palabras de un poema?

BORIS PASTERNAK
*

Maybe a year overcomes another,
just like falling snow,
or the words of a poem?

BORIS PASTERNAK

The snow over the tree´s branch. The plane summits from the painting fall upon the fruitful color of winter. Its spell grasps the slow process that is drying—moratorium of silence—with the same humid drive from the Chinese ink. In this snow, we find a perpetual calling. It is barely dark for them. It is a cold sun over the slightest piece of wood. The whiteness disinterest agitates the rawness from the sunsets. If as Kandinsky said, plants are a conjunction of lines and dots, there is in them such a living reality as much in the painting as in nature. Both edges, from the canvas and of winter, desire to become together, into one another.

*

The snow like temperature is doubtless. Its coldness attests the fertile vigils from the angels. Every white fountain nurtures with liquids the reality, thus making the cold the main force in the infinite stream of neutral color. I think about the symbolic resemblance between the ink of the poem and the snow. They seemed together an inexplicable dichotomy. Regardless, each of them is capable in their own kingdoms to provide substance to the wintery landscape. The first sketches full with light threaten to install themselves over the rooftops of time, premature snowfall, they come together alone in the artist´s subjective horizon towards the interior sunset of the frame.

*

Unattended, the woodpecker will firmly settle its fugitive figure over the sunset´s icy rinds. Invisible for the absolute prism of every glaze, its presence appears echoes near the insides of the log´s womb. In here is where the wildlings passengers acquire the highest of the imaginary flights. Where does the woodpecker came from? The outside shadow, the darkest shade of blue, almost Greek, is the favorite burden from the silent earth. And the woodpecker has something to do with the hand of the artist: it is the snow for the New Year.
